Our partner Prof. Sofia Avgitidou from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) had the opportunity to present the LEAFAP materials in an invited workshop by the Freinet skg pedagogical group with the title “The school as a learning community: from challenges to proposals for action” on the 9th May, 2026.

Teachers, head teachers and student-teachers participated actively and commented very positively the LEAFAP materials for supporting the opportunities to collaborate, research and reflect on their everyday work in schools. Many thanks to the 81st Primary School of Thessaloniki which hosted the workshop.

As part of our Erasmus+ project, we have developed a self-instructive, modular online training programme to support leaders and facilitators of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). The training is available as an interactive online course in its own dedicated area on this website, where you can work through the modules step by step at your own pace.

The training is organized into three modules, each addressing a key aspect of PLC work: Building Relationships, Collaboration and Communication; Inquiry, Reflection and Knowledge Building; and Organizing and Facilitating PLCs in In-Person and Digital Spaces. Each module consists of four sessions that follow a common structure — introduction, learning activities, further reading, and self-reflection. Each session takes no more than 45 minutes, offering focused and manageable steps.

While prior experience of leading or participating in a PLC is not required, the tools and tasks become even more valuable when applied in a real community of practice. The training builds directly on the project’s Conceptual Framework and Learning Outcomes, which define the competences needed for effective PLC leadership and facilitation.

Purpose and Approach

The training was designed to make the competencies identified by the project learnable in a structured, self-paced form. It requires no prior role in a PLC, although the tools and tasks gain in value where participants can apply them in an existing community of practice. The three modules address building relationships, collaboration and communication; facilitating learning and knowledge building through inquiry and reflection; and organising collaboration in face-to-face and online settings.


Structure and Format

The training is organised into three modules, each addressing a key dimension of PLC work: building relationships, collaboration and communication; facilitating learning and knowledge building through inquiry and reflection; and organising collaboration in face-to-face and online settings. Each module consists of four sessions that follow a common structure – an introduction, learning activities, further reading, and a self-reflection task. The sessions are designed to be self-instructive and take no more than 45 minutes each, allowing participants to work through them independently and at their own pace.

Conclusions and Implications

The modular training closes the arc from the project’s research base to practice: the literature review and focus group findings informed the conceptual framework and learning outcomes, which in turn defined the competencies the modules were built to develop, drawing on the activity collection for their exercises. The modules were trialled in national application events in the partner countries, and the feedback gathered there fed into the final version.

The Final Conference of the LeaFaP project has successfully taken place – and what a meaningful and enriching event it was.

It was a great opportunity to come together with colleagues and partners from across Europe – including Norway, Italy, Germany, Spain, Cyprus and Greece – to exchange ideas, perspectives, and experiences around Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).

The conference offered a diverse and engaging program:

✨ inspiring keynotes and workshops on PLCs

✨ valuable insights into different concepts and practices (e.g., lesson-based approaches)

✨ interactive round table discussions, where everyone contributed

✨ and many moments of genuine networking and collaboration

Beyond the sessions, what made this event truly special was the spirit of openness, shared learning, and connection.


We are especially proud to have contributed to the development of new tools supporting translation and accessibility, helping to make collaboration across languages even more effective.

At the 30th Congress of the German Educational Research Association (DGfE) in Munich, the LeaFaP consortium hosted the symposium “Professional Learning Communities as Relevant Bridging Method across Professional, Institutional and Curricular Disruptions in Educational Fields”. Chaired by Katja Kansteiner, several members of our consortium shared their expertise on how PLCs help individuals and social systems overcome fractures in thinking and doing.

The panel presented findings from our collective work in four key areas:

Initial Teacher Education: Bridging the theory-practice gap through student-teacher PLCs during internships.


School Development: The vital role of facilitation in orchestrating learning communities within a learning organization.

Institutional Transitions: Strengthening cooperation between staff from kindergartens and primary schools.

Higher Education: Investigating the procedural and structural support needed for cross-faculty learning engagement.
